This trip has sparked a whole new interest in western culture versus eastern culture, how they've individually developed and influenced each other. I think it stems from my visits to museums in Tokyo—noticing how they just don't really compare to the museums back home. But why should they compare? Why are they trying to mimic western institutions? I've recognized Japan's ability to be inspired by another culture, yet make it their own. When it comes to artistic institutions, though, most of them don't seem to be adapted to Japanese standards.
And why exactly is western culture SO idolized here?
